Scroll and you’ll see how battered this chair was when my client found it. But the frame of a #parkerknoll is strong. And the nasty degrading foam fillings were stripped out for a fully natural fibre makeover. No glue, no foam. And loved working with the @madeauxhome Jajim fabric. Such wonderful engagement at #decorex2024 gorgeous to have fellow upholsterer support @studiostanway @janesvilleupholstery @zoeknightinteriors and so many of you who came to say hello. A few key facts we highlighted. The energy industry has moved to 43% renewables, yet the soft furniture industry must be teetering around the 99% petrochemical mark. Foam is a petrochemical. 20% of the mass of a sofa can be flame retardant chemicals. And those chemicals leave the foam and fabric unrecyclable at end of life. So we’ve built ourselves a furniture industry that cannot be circular. I think we need to stick our heads together and come up with a solution - better for the planet - and better for our health. Today on @houseandgardenuk an article on toxic chemical flame retardants in furniture and why we’d be far safer and healthier if we moved to wool fire barrier cloths - that would mean less toxic smoke - healthier homes - recyclable foam - no incinerating sofas and protecting the environment. The UK energy market has moved to 43% renewables in a drive towards net zero. Meanwhile the UK furniture industry is almost 100% petro-chemical based fillings. And these fillings (UK foam) are 100% un-recyclable. At end of use they require incineration due to the toxicity and persistence (long life) of the chemical flame retardants. Meanwhile French foam can be recycled….There are better ways, let’s start talking…..Thank you to @interiordesigndeclares for the panel discussion invitation and continued support, to @thesustainableangle for commissioning this art installation, to @schoolofupholstery for growing mushrooms, to @louismoreau.london for expert quilting, to @ponda.bio for their soft bullrush quilt batting, to @worldofwoool for the British wool, to @agoprene for the seaweed foam and to @sould.dk for the eelgrass. And the wadding is not your average polyester - it’s a wadding created from the bulrush plant by @ponda.bio called BioPuff - 80/20 typha fibre/recycled polyester really lightweight fluffy and unbelievably gives off warmth. But they take skill and time to work with, so to speed things up we are looking for sheet material. But how to bind these natural fibres into a sheet form that might act like foam? Many of the binders used make the product more flammable and that leads to products like rubberised coir being treated with flame retardant chemicals to pass UK Fire regs. So we are looking for a binder that inhibits flammability and this is where mycelium comes in. The brilliantly inventive @alexlawdesigns of @schoolofupholstery has experimented with growing mycelium through a straw flax substrate. Miraculously it has both bounce and structure. It is not fire tested, it is an experiment. Perhaps art speaks louder than words. This footstool will be exhibited next week at Future Fabrics Expo 2024 held on 25/26 June at @magazinelondon organised by @thesustainableangle #artandactivism #mycelium #sustainable #footstool #upholstery

Really impressed by my little trip to the Kingston School of Art show @product_furniture_kingston. Great to see the table with no glue or screws, easy to disassemble by @fin.ff_design. Then the footstool with no staples or tacks where fabric is clamped by @sophie_mockridge. And the cushioning held in place by zips, poppers and pockets by @lcoxondesign. Replacing polystyrene balls with crumbled cork by @gussie_quailefound. And the stackable stools designed to create an outdoor community by @pollyjdesign So many great ideas for a future where furniture can be disassembled to adapt, be repaired or recycled, or where furniture helps create a kind place to coexist thank you @kingston_productfurniture #sustainabledesign

Very lucky to be working on a chair once owned by George Eliot (of Middlemarch fame), and even luckier to peel back the fat layer of cotton felt and hair and find what I’m pretty sure is the original horsehair pad on the button back. It’s been taken off and put back on again because the webs and hessian are only about 70 years old but the lack of tack holes, aged linen scrim and total lack of tack holes under the arms make me think this is original. Much of my work now is working with designers and clients looking at more sustainable furniture filling materials. I started by separating all my workshop waste - cardboard, plastics, metal, fabric large enough for cushions, fabric small enough for craft and fabric too small to be useful. The new offcuts of fabric too small to be useful is a big big big bag. What can we do with it? To comply with the 1988 Furniture Fire Safety Regs on a post 1950 chair this would need fire testing as a filling solution. #sustainablematerialsourcing #sustainable #ecofurniture #upholstery #cradletocirculardesign #craft #madeinengland
